Requirements
Group Size: 4 min-8 max
Minimum Stay: 3 nights
Experience: All group members must have completed an avalanche safety course. Glacier travel/ski mountaineering experience is not required.
Gear: All group members must be prepared with essential touring and avalanche safety gear. We strongly recommend fat powder skis (minimum 100mm underfoot – the fatter the better!) and splitboards for snowboarders.
Physical Requirements: Participants must be in good physical condition, and comfortable touring for long distances and carrying their own backcountry packs. Ascents from the yurt range from 400-1000m in vertical gain, to maximum elevations of around 3,650m.
Don’t have the #s to meet our minimum requirement? Check out our Small Groups/Solo Travelers Bulletin.
Hire A Local Guide
Uneasy with the self-guided philosophy in mountains you know nothing about? Don’t have the avalanche training and bc experience required for a self-guided stay?
The Kyrgyzstan Mountain Guides Association (KMGA) was established with help from Mammut and the IFMGA, who initiated a rigorous training program for local guides in 2008. Today, the KMGA is a great resource for groups looking to hire a properly trained local ski/mountain guide.
Check out the “Find a guide” tool on the KMGA website, or contact us if you would like us to connect you with KMGA guides who have been to and guided from the 40 Tribes yurt.
We are happy to offer self-guided pricing to all groups who hire a local guide.

What Else
Village Stay: We recommend an overnight in the village prior to your stay at the yurt and can easily arrange a comfortable dinner/bed/breakfast scenario for your group.
Good Food…And Lots Of It: That’s right, self-guided stays are fully catered. Our local partners will accompany your group at the yurt to host, cook, clean and manage yurt chores.
